Students were evacuated this afternoon from the John Jay Educational Campus (237 7th Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets) after a Millennium High School student received a suspicious phone call saying that a bomb was located somewhere in the building. The incident was first reported by Brooklyn Patch.
A police spokesperson said they received a phone call at 12:22pm today, March 2. The bomb squad and other officials swept the building after students, faculty, and staff left the building.
7th Avenue was crowded with students, who assembled several blocks north of the building.
Police say that they concluded their sweep at roughly 12:58pm. Students flowed down the street back to the John Jay Educational Campus on a windy, sunny afternoon.
“I was in the bathroom when they started telling everyone they needed to leave,” said one student crossing the 7th Avenue at 3rd Street. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
“I heard there was a bomb in someone’s locker,” said another student, “but they didn’t find anything.”
Several students said they were familiar with the bomb threat and evacuation at Midwood High School (2839 Bedford Avenue) which took place two days ago on Tuesday, February 28.
“Yeah, I thought about that,” said Cristina, a Millennial High School student. “But they didn’t find anything there.”
Many students seemed unconcerned and upbeat as they returned to classes after the incident. The streets were opened up again while police and school officials ushered students back into their classes.
The John Jay Educational Campus is home to Millennium Brooklyn High School as well as Park Slope Collegiate, the Secondary School for Law, and the Secondary School for Journalism.
